CROCHET IN COMMON 12" SQUARE

Crochet in Common 12” Square
I hook and Red heart WW yarn (If you crochet tightly, you might want to use an “H” hook

Abbreviations CH = Chain, DC = Double Crochet, SS = Slip stitch, TR=Triple Crochet
Special Stitches:
** Special Note in making Overlapping Cluster Stitch:   
~ Beg 4 dc cl – ch 3 (counts as first dc), keeping last stitch of each dc on hook, make three more dc (in stitch indicated at **) , yo, pull through all loops on hook
~4 dc cl keeping last stitch of each dc on hook make 4 dc (in stitch indicated at **), yo, and pull through all loops
You may have to "cheat" when making the 3rd dc of the very last cluster stitch depending how you joined the dc stitched of Row 1.
~XTC - Extended Triple Crochet:  YO twice, insert into previous round below and draw up a loop, yo, draw through two loops, yo, draw through two loops, yo, draw through last two loops on hook (The first draw up you may want to do loosely.)
~BCS= Back Cross Stitch: Skip next st, dc in next st; working behind last st made, dc in skipped st.
~3DC Cluster:  IN sp indicated (yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times,  yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
~2DC Cluster:  IN sp indicated (YO and draw up a loop, Yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) 2 times. Yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Begin with a ch 6 and ss to join.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as a DC) then do 15 more DC.  Join with a SS in top of the ch.  (16 DCs)

*NOTE* Make first and second dc in back loop only, then make third and fourth dc in front loop only (using 4 of the previous row's dc stitches).  Next cluster stitch begins in the back loops of the third (then fourth) dc of this previous cluster.

Rnd 2: Work one Beg 4 dc cl, (See Special sts) chain 2, (4 dc cl, with ch 2 between.) 7 times. Slip stitch to join at top of first cluster. (8 Overlapping cluster Sts or 32 dc sts & 16 ch sp.)

Rnd 3:  Ch3 (counts as a stitch) 2DC in same st as ch3.  (Ch1, DC in next chain 2 space, Ch1, 3DC in top of next cluster)7 times.  Ch1, DC in last ch2 space, Ch1 and join in top of first ch3. (32DC & 16 ch1 spaces)

Rnd 4:  Sl st to next dc, ch 1, sc in same st.  (Ch 6, skip all sts and ch spaces to 2nd dc in next 3 dc group, sc in st) 7 times.  Ch 6, skip all sts and ch spaces, join to first sc st.  (8 loops - 8 sc and 48 ch total)

Rnd 5:  CH3, DC, CH2, 2DC all in same spot, CH1.  *4DC in nx CH6 spot, CH1, 4DC in nx CH6 spot, CH1. (2DC, CH2, 2DC in next SC) CH1.* Repeat three times.  End with 4DC in CH6 spot, CH1, 4DC in CH6 spot, CH1 & join to top of BEG CH3.  (4 sides and corners, 3 CH1 spots per side –one after corner, between 4DC, and after 4DC - 8DC total per side)

Rnd 6: SS into next st and next ch2 sp. (ch3, 2DC cluster, ch3, 3DC cluster in same ch2 sp). *+Ch2, Work a 3DC cluster in next ch1 sp, Ch4, 3DC cluster in next ch1 sp, Ch4, 3DC cluster in next ch1 sp, Ch2+ (3DC cluster, ch3, 3DC cluster in corner ch2 sp).* Repeat *to* 2 more times, then +to+ once more.  Join to top of BEG ch3. (20 Cluster sts)

Rnd 7 – Ch 2 (counts as hdc above cluster stitch), 4 hdc in corner, **hdc into top of cluster, 2 hdc in space, hdc into top of cluster, *(2 hdc, 1 xtc in between the 4 dc of Round 5, chain 4, sl st into top of xtc, 2 hdc in ch 4 space), hdc into top of cluster*, repeat once from * to *, 2 hdc in space, hdc in top of cluster, 4 hdc in corner.  Repeat remaining sides of square from ** to ** with the exception of the last cluster stitch (which already has the up chain) and the corner stitches.
(Stitch count:  84 hdc, 8 xtc, 8 ch 4 picots)

Round 8 SS into 2nd hdc of corner 4hdc of Round 7.  Ch3, DC in same, Ch2, 2DC in next st. * DC in 2 sts, BCS, DC in 2 sts, (Ch3. Skip next st, skip XTC, skip next st) and DC in next 3 sts. Repeat () once more.  DC in 2, BCS, DC in next 2 sts.  2DC in next st, Ch2, 2DC in next st.* Repeat around and Join in top of beginning ch3.  (60DC, 8BCS, & 8 Ch3 loops)

Rnd 9: SS to next ch 2 space, ch 3, DC, ch 2, 2 DC for corner. [*1 dc in next st, ch 2, sk 2 dc, 1 dc in next st, ch 2, sk cross stitch, DC in next st, ch 2, sk 1 dc, 3 dc in ch 3 space, ch 2, sk 1 dc, 1 dc in next st, ch 2, sk next st, 3 dc in ch 3 space, ch 2, sk 1 dc, 1 dc in next st, ch 2, sk cross stitch, DC in next st, ch 2, sk 2 dc, 1 dc in next st,* in corner space (2 dc, 2ch, 2dc)] x 3, last side * to *.  68 dc, 32 ch 2 spaces, 4 ch 2 corners

Rnd 10:  SLPST into corner, CH3, DC, CH2, 2DC.  *(CH1, SKP1ST, popcorn in next DC, CH1, SKP1ST, 2DC in CH spot, FPDC around next DC, 2DC in next CH spot, FPDC around next DC, 2DC in next CH spot, CH1, SKP1ST, popcorn in next DC, CH1, SKP1ST, 2DC in CH spot, FPDC in next DC, 2DC in next CH spot, CH1, SKP1ST, popcorn in next ST, CH1, 2DC in next CH spot, FPDC around next DC, 2DC in next CH spot, FPDC around next DC, 2DC in next CH spot, CH1, SKP1ST, popcorn in next ST, CH1, SKP1ST), in corner, 2DC, CH2, 2DC.* repeat ** 2 times, and then do () one time, joining to BEG CH3.
(8 CH1 spots, 4 popcorns,  16DC + 5FPDC = 21DC per side, totaling  33 stitches, not including the corner stitches)

Rnd 11: SS to corner: Ch3, DC, ch2, 2DC=Corner.  *+DC in next 2sts, DC into back loop of next popcorn.  DC in next 2sts,  FPDC around next 4 sts.  Skip 2sts, (IN back loops of next popcorn work a TR, DC, 3HDC, DC, TR.) Skip 2sts, FPDC around next fpdc, Skip next 2sts, (IN back loops of next popcorn work a TR, DC, 3HDC, DC, TR.)  Skip next 2sts, FPDC around next 4sts, DC in next 2sts, DC in back loop of next popcorn, DC in next 2sts,+ Work a Corner of 2DC, Ch2, 2DC.* Repeat *to* 2 more times, then +to+ once more.  Join to beginning Ch3
