12" with an "H" hook

SPECIAL STS/NOTES: BEG CORNER:  Ch3, DC, Ch2, 2DC.  WORK CORNER: 2DC, Ch2, 2DC in next ch2sp..  ~NOTES~ Ch3 counts as a st.  JOIN:  Join w/ slst in top of beg ch3. FPTC: Front post Triple crochet. POPCORN: Uses 5DC in one st, remove hook and insert in first dc of popcorn, catch the last dc and complete through.

Rnd 1: Ch4, work 15DC in 4th ch from hook.  Join in top of ch4. (16dc)

Rnd 2: Ch3, DC, ch2, 2DC in same st.  DC in next dc. FPDC around next dc, DC in next dc.  Work corner in next dc.  DC in 3dc, Work corner in next dc.  DC in next dc, FPTC in same st as the 1st fpdc.  DC in next dc, Work corner in next dc. DC in last 3dc, Join. (27dc & 1fptc)

Rnd 3: Slst into ch2 sp & beg corner. *see special sts.  +Ch1, skip one st, and DC in next, ch1, skip one and FPDC around next dc, Ch1, skip one, DC in next dc, Ch1, skip one,  work corner.  (Ch1, skip one, DC in next dc) 3Xs, Ch1, skip one+.  Work corner. Repeat +to+ once & join.  (44dc)

Rnd 4: Slst into ch2 sp & beg corner. +DC in 5sts, FPDC around next fpdc. DC in 5sts, work corner. DC in 11sts,+ work corner.  Repeat +to+ once, DC in last 11dc and join. (60dc)

Rnd 5: Slst into ch2 sp & beg corner. +(Ch1, skip one, DC in next dc)3Xs Ch1,  FPDC around next fpdc. (Ch1, skip one, DC in next dc)3Xs Ch1, skip one st & work corner. (Ch1, skip one, DC in next dc)7Xs Ch1+ in next ch2 sp work corner.  Repeat +to+ once & join. (76dc)

Rnd 6: Slst into ch2 sp & beg corner. +DC in 8sts. SC in next ch1 sp, ch-20, slst in top of sc just made,  SC in same sp, ch-18, slst in top of sc just made (RIGHT WINGS MADE). FPDC around next fpdc. SC in next sp, ch-18, slst in top of sc just made, SC in same sp, ch-20, slst in top of sc just made (LEFT WINGS MADE) DC in 8dc, Work corner.+ DC in 19dc, Work corner. Repeat +to+ once.  DC in last 19dc & Join. (66dc, 4sc, 4 sets of wings)

Rnd 7: Slst into ch2 sp & beg corner.  +DC in next 2dc, (ch1, skip one, DC in next 2dc)2Xs Ch1, skip one, DC in next dc, DC in between right wings.  Popcorn in next st (above fpdc), DC in between left wings.  DC in next dc, (ch1, skip one, DC in next 2dc)3Xs.  Work corner. DC in next 2dc. (Ch1, skip one, DC in next 2dc)7Xs.+  Work corner.  Repeat +to+ once & join. (98dc, 2 popcorns)

Rnd 8: Slst into ch2 sp & beg corner.  [DC in 27 sts,  Work corner.]3Xs.  DC in last 27 sts. Join. (124dc)

Rnd 9: Slst into ch2 sp & beg corner.  +(Ch1, skip one, DC in next dc)3Xs, Ch1, skip one (catching the right ch-20 wing, dc in next). (Ch1, skip one, DC in next dc)7Xs, Ch1, skip one,  (catching the left ch-20 wing, dc in next). (Ch1, skip one, DC in next dc)3Xs. Ch1, skip one, and work Corner.   (Ch1, skip one dc, DC in next) 15Xs. Ch1,+  skip one, work a corner. Repeat +to+ once & join. (110dc, 30ch1 sps)

Rnd 10: Slst into ch2 sp & beg corner. +DC in 11sts, (catching the left ch-18 wing, dc in next). DC in 11sts, (catching the left ch-18 wing, dc in next). DC in 11sts,  Work corner.  *DC in next 35sts+  work corner. Repeat +to+ once & Join. (156dc)

Measure your square here, mine measured about 11 ½” so I did a round 11 of SC which brought it to a 12” square.  Your size will depend on the yarn you choose, your hook preference, and your tension.  Adjust Round 11 as needed with a SC or HDC.  You might not even need a round 11.
