12” with an H Hook & Worsted Weight Yarn in your choice of colors.  Example shows 3 colors: A=White, B=Light blue, & C=Dark Blue
NOTES:  As you can see, this square shows something different depending on how many colors you use and where you change your colors.  Pattern is written for picture above.  If you want the effect of the picture at the end of this pattern, then see “NOTES” at the bottom before starting pattern to make a note of where those color changes happen. BOLDED PRINT: Repeated in pattern.  “STS”=Stitches: Any st or chsps.  SPIKE SC: Insert hook in specified st/sp, Pull up lp even with current rnd. (don’t pull too tight or will bunch).  YO & draw thru 2 lps on hook.

Rnd 1: With Color A, Ch4, 15dc in 4th ch from hook, join w/slst in 3rd ch of beg ch4. (16dc)

Note: This round will show some cupping which works out in Rnd 3.
Rnd 2: Ch3 (counts as a st throughout pattern) & dc in same st. (Ch1, sk1, 2dc in next st)7x. Ch1, sk1, join w/slst in top of beg ch3. (16dc, 8ch1sps)

Rnd 3: Slst to next ch1sp.  Ch4, dc in same sp. *Ch2, skp next 2dc, (dc1, ch1, dc) in next ch1sp*; rep from * to * around; ch2; join with a slst in 3rd ch of beg ch4.  Fasten off color A. (16dc, 8ch1sps, 8ch2sps)

Rnd 4: Join Color B with a slst in any ch2sp; (ch3, dc, ch2, 2dc) in same sp. Working in front of the next 2dc and in front of the ch1 sp, spikesc in next ch1sp of Rnd 2 (between the dc). [(2dc, ch2, 2 dc) in next ch2sp, spikesc in next ch1sp of Rnd 2] 7x; join w/slst in top of beg ch3. (32dc, 8ch2sps, 8spikesc)

Rnd 5: Slst to next ch2sp, (ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc) in same sp. [*Ch3, sc in next ch2sp; ch3;* (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch2sp] 3x. Rep from * to *; join w/slst in top of beg ch3. Fasten off Color B. (24dc, 4sc, 12ch3sps)

Rnd 6: Join Color C w/slst in any corner ch2sp, (ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc) in same sp. [*Hdc in next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch1, sk next ch3, work 6dc in next sc, ch1, sk next ch3, sc in next dc. Hdc in next 2dc.* Corner as (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch3sp] 3x. Rep from * to *; join w/slst in top of beg ch3. (48dc, 16hdc, 8sc, 8ch1sps)

Rnd 7: Slst over to corner ch2sp, (ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc) in same sp.  [*Dc in next 3dc, hdc in next 2hdc, sc in next sc, sc in next ch1sp, ch1, sk2dc, 3dc in each of next 2dc, ch1, sk2dc, sc in next ch1sp, sc in next sc, hdc in next 2hdc, dc in next 3dc.*  In corner ch2sp work (3dc, ch2, 3dc)]3x.  Rep * to* once, join w/slst in top of beg ch3. Fasten off Color C. (72dc, 16hdc, 16sc, 8ch1sps)

Rnd 8: BLO (Back loop only); skipped sts include ch1sts. Join Color B with a slst in any corner ch2sp; (ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc) in same sp, [* (ch3, sk2sts, hdc in next st) 2x. Ch3, sk2st, dc in next st, ch3, sk4sts, slst in next 2sts, ch3, sk4sts, dc in next st. (Ch3, sk2sts, hdc in next st)2x. Ch3, sk2sts,* corner as (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch2sp]3x. Rep from * to *; join w/slst in top of beg ch3. (32dc, 16hdc, 32ch3sp, 8slst)

Rnd 9: Slst over to ch2sp & work (ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc).  [*Ch2, sk2dc, dc in next dc; (ch2, sksp, dc in next st)3x.  Ch2, sksp, dc in next 2slsts, (ch2, sksp, dc in next st)4x. Ch2, sk2dc,* corner in next sp]3x.  Rep from * to *; join with a slst in 3rd ch of beg ch6.  (64dc, 44ch2sps)

Rnd 10: Slst over to ch2sp, (ch4, tc, ch2, 2tc) in same sp. [*Tc in next 3dc.  2tc in next ch2sp, (skdc, 2tc in next ch2sp)4x, tc in next 2dc, (2tc in next chsp, skdc)4x.  2tc in next sp, tc in next 3dc,* (2tc, ch2, 2tc in corner ch2sp]3x.  Rep *to* once, join. (72trc, 56dc, 4ch2sps)

Rnd 11:  Slst into ch2sp, beg corner.  [Dc in next 32sts, work corner in ch2sp]3x.  Dc in last 32sts, join w/slst in top of beg ch3.

To use only 2 colors as picture above, Start with Color A on rnds 1-4, change to B with rnds 5-7, go back to Color A on rnds 8-11.
