6” Square with “H” hook and WW yarn in 1 or 2 colors.

Round 1: Ch4, work 15DC in 4th ch from hook. Join in top of beg ch4  (16dc)

Round 2: Ch3, DC in joining. (FPDC around (ar) next dc, 2DC in next dc) 7X.  FPDC ar last dc.  Join in top of ch3. (always use this joining method unless otherwise specified)  (24sts)

Round 3: Slst in next 2sts.  Ch3, DC in same st.  [+Ch1, FPDC ar next 2dc together, Ch1+, 2DC in next dc.]7X. Repeat +to+ once &  join (24sts, 16ch1sps)

Rnd 4: Ch1, SC in joining.  SC in each st around.  Pull thru new color when joining to first sc.  (40sc)

Rnd 5: Ch3, DC, Ch1, 2DC, BEG CORNER made. [DC in 9sts, IN next sc do 2DC, Ch1, 2DC CORNER made.] DC in last 9sts.  Join to top of beg ch3. (52dc) Slst in dc & ch1sp.

Rnd 6: Beg Corner.  [DC in 13sts, corner in ch1sp.]3X.  DC in last 13sts.  (68dc)

I love this square but however many times I try there are more than 40 SC stitches on round 4. What am I doing wrong?

Liz, let me look at this square later today, (making brunch) for my boys and I right now. Make sure you have 24sc and 16 ch1sps in rnd 3, if that count is correct, then we can find out what is going on in rnd 4.
