12” Square with an “H” hook and Worsted Weight yarn

• SPECIAL STS:  FPDC: Work a DC around post of dc specified YOU ARE GOING AROUND THE POST, SO YOU WILL HAVE THE TOP TWO LOOPS UNWORKED IN THAT SAME DC.  DTR:  (YO hook 3 times,  insert hook into st indicated. YO & pull up a loop, should have 5 loops on your hook.  (YO & draw through 2 loops.) 4Xs.

Rnd 1: Ch4, Do 7DC in 4th ch from hook.  Join in beg ch4.  (8dc)

Rnd 2: Ch5 (counts as dc & ch2) DC in same st. [FPDC *see special sts*  in next st,  In next st do “DC, Ch2, DC”] 3Xs.  FPDC in last st.  Join w/ slst in top of beg ch3 always, unless otherwise specified.  Slst into ch2sp.  (12dc)

Rnd 3: Ch3 (counts as a st always), “DC, ch2, 2DC” in same ch2 sp. Beg Corner made, now & throughout pattern.  [FPDC in 3sts,  IN ch2sp do “2DC, ch2, 2DC,  Corner made, Now & throughout pattern.] 3Xs, FPDC in last 3 & join.   Slst in next st & ch2sp.  (28dc)

Rnd 4: Beg Corner.  [FPDC in 7sts, corner in ch2sp] 3Xs.  FPDC in last 7sts, & join.   Slst in next st & ch2sp. (44dc)

Rnd 5: Beg Corner.  [FPDC in 11sts, corner in ch2sp] 3Xs.  FPDC in last 11 & join.  Slst in next st & ch2sp.  (60dc)

Rnd 6: Beg Corner.  [FPDC in 15sts, corner in ch2sp] 3Xs.  FPDC in last 15sts, & join.  Slst in next st & ch2sp.  (76dc)

Rnd 7: Ch1, 3SC in same sp.  [+SC in 2sts,  FPDC in15sts, SC in 2sts.+ 3SC in ch2sp] 3Xs.  Repeat +to+ once & join in 1st sc.  Slst into next sc.  (28sc, 60dc)

Rnd 8: Ch1, 3SC in same sc.  [+SC in 3sts,  FPDC in 15sts, SC in 3sts.+  3SC in next sc.] 3Xs.  Repeat +to+ once & join in 1st sc.  Slst into next sc.  (36sc,60dc)

Rnd 9: Ch1, 3SC in same sc.  [+SC in 4sts, FPDC in next st, (look behind the fpdc you just worked.  See the top loops from the same dc?  Mark that st and the 15th st as well) FPDC in next 14sts. SC in 4sts.+  3SC in next sc.]3Xs.  Repeat +to+ once & join in 1st sc.  Slst into next sc.  (44sc,60dc)

Rnd 10: Ch1, 3SC in same sc.  [+SC in 5sts, slst in next st, skip-3sts, do 7 TC in next st, skip-2sts, slst in next, skip-2sts & do 7 TC in next, skip-3sts & slst in next st. SC in 5sts,+  3SC in next sc.] 3Xs.  Repeat +to+ once & join in 1st sc.  Slst into next sc. (52sc,56tc,12slsts)

Rnd 11: Beg Corner.  [+DC in 6sts, skip next slst.  (Behind Heart Hump) do a DTR *see special sts* in 1st marked st of rnd 9 & in next 14sts. (last one in that 15th marked st) skip slst,  DC in 6sts+.  Work Corner  in next st] 3Xs Repeat +to+ once & join.  Slst in next st & ch2sp. (64dc,60dtr)

Rnd 12: Beg Corner.  [+ (Ch1, skip-1dc, DC in next st) 5Xs.  Ch1, skip-1, Catch the 4th tc of heart hump & DC in next st. (Ch1, skip-1, DC in next st)3Xs.  Ch1, skip-1,  Catch the 4th tc of heart hump & DC in next st. (Ch1, skip-1, DC in next st) 5Xs.  Ch1, skip-1+,  Corner in next ch2sp.] 3Xs Repeat +to+ once & join.  Slst in next st & ch2sp.  (76dc, 64 ch1sps)

Rnd 13: Beg Corner.  [DC in 35sts, Corner in next ch2sp] 3Xs. DC in last 35.  Join. (156dc)

Measure your square, depending on your yarn, hook size, and tension, you may need to add a round. I had to add the following round.

Rnd 14:  Slst into next st and ch2sp.  Ch1 & work 3sc.  [SC in 39sts, in ch2sp do 3SC.] 3Xs. SC in last 39sts.  Join to 1st sc and fasten off.  (168sc)
