My Abbreviations:  Work Corner: In next ch2 space, work 2dc, ch2, 2dc.  FPDC: Front post double crochet, SS: Slip stitch. FL: Front Loops. BL: Back loops

*Notes* When joining at the end of rounds work as follows: For a SC round, Join in 1st SC.  For a DC round, Join in 3rd Ch of beg 3. For the HDC start, join in the top of that beg ch2.

Also remember that the back or front loops that are in the ch 1 stitches will be "different" looking than the rest of the loops.  I hope this makes sense.  In this pattern, when working in the front loops, there is the "increase" in the ch1 stitches, but that increase is only going into one loop, so when counting the "loops" on the wrong side that were left over and not worked into, will be a different count.  

Rnd 1: ch4, work 9DC in 4th ch from hook.  Join in 3rd ch of beg ch4.  (10dc)

Rnd 2: Ch3, DC in same st as joining.  2DC in each dc around. Join. *see notes. (20)

Rnd 3:Ch3 DC in same st as joining. Ch1, 2DC in next st. [SC in 2sts, 2DC in nx st, Ch2, 2DC in nx st]4Xs.  SC in last 2sts.  Join. (20dc & 10sc)

Rnd 4: SS in next st and ch2 sp, in same sp work a Ch3, DC, Ch1, 2DC. [+SC in 2sts, SC dec over nx 2sts. SC in 2sts.+ In next sp work 2DC, Ch1, 2DC.]4Xs, repeat ++ once and join. (20dc, 20sc, 5 dec)

Rnd 5: SS in next st and ch2 sp and work Ch3, DC, Ch1, 2DC.  [+SC in 4sts, SS in decrease st.  SC in 4sts.+ In next sp work 2DC, Ch1, 2DC] 4Xs repeat ++ once and join.  (20dc, 40sc, 5ss)

Working in Front Loops for this round. 

Rnd 6: SS in FL of next st, SS into FL of ch1 st. Ch1, 3SC in same fl  [+SC in FLs of 6sts, SS in FL of next  ss, SC in FLs of 6sts.+  In FL of ch1 st work 3SC.]4Xs repeat ++ once and join in BL of Ch1 st from rnd 5. (75sc, 5ss)

*Look at the back of your work, see the free Back Loops?  You will be working in those loops.

Rnd 7: Ch1, 3SC in same BL as joining.  SC in BLs of 13sts.  3SC in BL of next st. (should be the BL of ch1 st) 4Xs  SC in the last 13 BLs.  Join.   (80sc)

Rnd 8: SS in FL of next sc. (2nd sc of the 3sc group).  Ch1, 3SC in same loop.  [SC in FLs of next 15sts. 3SC in next FL]4Xs SC in last 15 FLs.  Join, changing to white. (You should have 90SC, BUT only 80 loops on the wrong side)

Rnd 9: SS in the BL of rnd 8.  (just like the * in rnd 7). Ch3,  DC in each BL around, then join.  

(You  should have 80DC, because the 90 sc from rnd 8 were done in the front loops, meaning there will be less "loops" on the back than actual SC stitches.)

Rnd 10: Ch1, SC in same st as joining.  SC in 9sts, 3SC in next st. [SC in 19sts, 3SC in next st]3Xs.  SC in last 9sts.  Join.  (88sc)

Rnd 11: Work as follows: Ch1, SC in same st as joining.  SC in 3sts, HDC in next st, DC in next st, TC in 5sts.  In next st work 2DC, Ch2, 2DC.  DC in 5sts, SC in 8sts, DC in 8sts.  In next st work 2DC, Ch2, 2DC.  HDC in 7sts, DC in 8sts, HDC in 6sts.  In next st work 2HDC, Ch2, 2HDC.  HDC in 11sts, SC in 7sts, DC in 3sts.  IN next st work, 2DC, Ch2, 2TC.  TC in 5sts, DC in 4sts, SC in last two sts.  Join. *Note* This round might be a bit wonky, it should “square” out as you go along.  

Rnd 12: Ch2, HDC in 4sts, DC in 8sts.  Work Corner (see abbreviations)  in next sp. [DC in 25sts, Work Corner in next sp] (see abbreviations)  2Xs.  DC in 13sts, HDC in 8sts, DC in 4sts, Work Corner in next sp.  DC in 9sts, HDC in next st, HDC in last 3sts.  Join in top of beg ch2.  (116dc) FO color. *If you are using only one color, you can either Fasten off here and join the same color in a corner ch2 sp, or you can keep the same color on your hook & Slip stitch loosely in the next 13 sts and then into the ch2 sp.

Rnd 13: Join Blue in corner ch2 sp.  Ch3, DC, ch1, 2DC in same sp.  [+Ch1, skip st, DC in next st. 14Xs.  Ch1, Skip st,+ Work Corner in next ch2 sp] 3Xs then ++ once, join in 3rd ch of beg ch.

Rnd 14: SS into next st and ch2 sp and ch3, DC, ch1, 2DC.  [+DC in 2st, (DC in ch1 sp, FPDC around post of next dc) 14Xs.  DC in 2sts+ Work Corner in next sp] 3Xs.  repeat ++ once and join.

Rnd 15: SS in next st and ch2 sp and Ch3, DC, ch1, 2DC.  [+DC  in 4sts, FPDC around post of next dc, DC in next dc. 15Xs.  DC in 3sts. Work Corner in next sp] 3Xs. Repeat ++ once and join.  (164dc) FO.

*Measure your square to see if you might need to add a round of SC, HDC, or DC.  As with any square, your size may vary depending on your tension, choice of yarn and hook size.
